Summer 2011 – Update

The youth have been busy this summer putting in many hours at their worksites and attending weekly workshops. We would like to thank all of our Worksite Supervisors for teaching our youth new skills and supporting our program!

We reviewed the Job Search process in a series of workshops to help those youth looking for their own employment and where to find job postings. We spent time in these workshops providing assistance to youth filling out online job applications. Our Interviewing Skills workshop focused how to make yourself stand out from others interviewing for the same job by having prepared answers to some common questions. We also talked about how to handle the difficult questions that employers sometimes ask.

Our Work Ethic workshop included activities about what makes an employee successful and how to handle those things that can interfere with performance as well as good attendance. Our Money Management workshop focused on impulse spending and how to budget for your needs, as well as your goals. We also talked about how to research different careers using available resources during our Career Exploration workshop.

Our group was invited back to participate in the Country Western Line Dancing Luncheon through Senior Services of McHenry. We served lunch to the seniors and then socialized with them during the country line dancing.

We are excited to begin our Work Readiness classes again this fall and enrolling some new participants!

Our youth were asked to prepare for Mock Interviews and to treat the experience as if it were a real interview.

Several volunteers (Linda Kasprzak shown above) helped us by meeting with a youth, asking 15 different interview questions, and then providing feedback on how they could improve their answers.

Workforce is here to help you get to work!

Volunteering to help seniors is a great experience to add to your resume.

Having fun with Senior Services of McHenry!

Here's how you can get involved ...

McHenry County Workforce Network's Workforce Prep Program serves youth from economically disadvantaged families. The year-round program is designed to help young adults aged 14-21 build skills needed to secure jobs and succeed in the workforce. Through instruction, practical experience and guidance, young workers explore career interests, learn job search strategies, and develop work readiness skills. Communication and teamwork are an integral part of the learning experience.

During the summer, half of the Workforce Prep Program participants engage in hands-on learning through a paid work experience at a non-profit organization. Counselors make every effort to match each youth with a site that fits his/her interests or needs.

Our Workforce Prep Program offers:

Paid work experience
Job search, career planning classes
Basic skill enhancement
Year round program activities
