Welcome!
McHenry County Animal Control (MCAC) is a division of the McHenry County Department of Health (Veterinary Public Health). Effective animal control protects the domestic animal population from abuse and other health risks, and protects the human population from disease and injury associated with animals. MCAC provides a variety of enforcement, educational and animal disposition services including dog licensing, cruelty and complaint investigation, pet care presentations, and animal adoptions.
Our Animal Control Officers are authorized to investigate possible animal related law violations and take appropriate enforcement action. Each year, we conduct numerous investigations, ranging from relatively minor code violations to felony animal cruelty. In some cases, we may promote voluntary compliance by educating owners about their animal care responsibilities; other situations may warrant administrative action including fines. Our Officers also rescue animals that are stray, sick or injured.
If you know of a situation where you believe an animal's welfare may be in jeopardy (such as animal abuse, neglect, injury or endangerment) or where public health or safety may be impacted (such as a bite, attack or harassment of a person by an animal), we urge you to contact our office at 815-459-6222 and report what you have seen or heard. An Animal Control Officer will be dispatched to investigate the situation.
