Exemptions/Permits

 

 

 A Recreational Fire is defined as a temporary outdoor fire for warmth, cooking for human consumption, or for non-ceremonial purposes where the fire is not larger than 3’x3’x3’ and excludes leaves, grass or shrubbery clippings or cuttings.  No permit is needed for a recreational fire.    

 

A Ceremonial Fire (Bonfire) is defined as an outdoor fire larger than 3’x3’x3’ which is used for entertainment purposes as part of a specifically scheduled public or private event and excludes leaves, grass or shrubbery clippings or cuttings. Habitat Reclamation includes prescribed burns associated with ecologic restoration or natural landscape management.  A permit from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) is required for this type of burn. Click here to download a permit or call IEPA at 847.294.4000 Bureau of Air. Firefighting Training
