2016 brings a celebration of 50 years of public health accomplishments in McHenry County.  McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) opened its doors for the first time in 1966.   For half a century The Department has operated under its mission to improve the health and safety of McHenry County residents.

In the early days the focus was on providing home health care.  On July 30 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed legislation establishing the Medicare and Medicaid programs, providing funding to help elderly citizens to stay in their homes.  Recognizing the need for providing this home care service, the McHenry County Board of Supervisors voted on April 12 1966 to establish the Board of Health and the Department of Health.

Times have changed since the 1960’s and the Department has shifted its energies to other County public health needs.  Many things we take for granted today were novel concepts half a century ago.  In the words of Mike Hill, Administrator for McHenry County Department of Health, “People have become smarter about their health over the past five decades, but we continue looking forward and exploring ways to strengthen and improve the health of County residents.”
