The Trex Company is the country's largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing products and is headquartered in Winchester, Virginia. Trex turns millions of pounds of recycled and reclaimed plastic and waste wood into Trex products each year. Most of these raw materials come from recovered plastic grocery bags, plastic film and waste wood fiber. Since the Trex Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge began in 2006, Trex’s overall plastic bag recycling volume has grown to more than three billion bags. With your help, we can build the plastic bag recycling effort and continue to educate children on the importance of recycling.
MCSEEP fully supports the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County's BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag) Campaign and will work together on this challenge this year to reinforce bring your own bag shopping. BUT what about all that other plastic film we can collect? When we start to bring this awareness to students, they discover how much plastic film is used for packaging and that it not only can be recycled but better yet reduced at the source.
Participating schools compete to collect the most bags of plastic film to be recycled by Trex. Each participating school receives a birdhouse from Trex, and winning schools receive a Trex bench. MCSEEP will serve as the communicator between Trex and your school. After signing up with MCSEEP, Trex will ship the collection boxes to your school. Your school simply needs to publicize the event, weigh and report your plastic totals to MCSEEP, and regularly drop bags off at Jewel stores.
Last year 13 schools worked together collecting 6456 pounds. Glacial Ridge Elementary School in Crystal lake won the competitive challenge with 2837 pounds! W If you've participated in the challenge in the past - sign up again and keep the momentum going.
